Run Telus Pik TV on NVIDIA Shield TV (and other Android TV devices)

Important Update 2020-12-17

Unfortunately, the old version 1 of the app has stopped working, so everyone will need to update to version 2. Since the app is now officially supported on NVIDIA Shield, users can download it directly from the Play Store.

If you use a different Android TV device, you can download the APK from APKCombo and sideload the app as usual. Drop a comment below to let us know if it works on your device.

Previous version instructions and download:

Undoubtedly the biggest complaint against Telus Pik TV is the laggy (and sometimes buggy) Android TV box that the company sells as the default way to watch on your TV. And while Telus now offers an app for Apple TV, it’s a more expensive option that doesn’t make a lot of sense for those of us who have already chosen the Android platform over Apple.

But what if you already own a quality Android TV box like the NVIDIA Shield TV? Unfortunately, Telus does not allow the Pik TV app for Android TV to be installed from the Play Store to any devices other than it’s own… But it turns out there’s a (relatively) easy workaround that allows Pik TV to be side-loaded on the Shield TV – and the performance is, as you would expect, much smoother on the more powerful NVIDIA hardware.

2019‑02‑25 Updated to new Pik TV version published on Play Store
2019‑06‑05 Removed AndroidManifest.xml sections related to starting on boot, etc. (fixes application load timeout errors)
2019‑09‑12 Updated to new Pik TV version published on Play Store (1.92.202)
2019‑10‑25 current version Updated to new Pik TV version published on Play Store (1.92.203)
“Stability improvements and bug fixes”
2020‑12‑17 Modified version 1 of the APK no longer works – download has been removed
Version 2 is officially supported on the Nvidia Shield and available for download on the Play Store.

Steps to modify the Telus Pik TV APK to run on NVIDIA Shield (and other Android TV devices)

  1. Obtain the Pik TV APK from the Telus-provided Android box

    Important: Must be from the Pik TV Android box. It is different from the app that can be installed on Android phones/tablets. You can use an app like FX File Explorer to copy the apk off the device.

  2. Decode the APK using apktool:
    apktool d com.telus.mediaroom.tvx.proda.apk
  3. Remove this line from AndroidManifest.xml:
    <uses-library android:name="com.telus.mediaroom.pikstb"></uses-library>
  4. Optionally, remove these sections from AndroidManifest.xml:
    (I believe these sections are related to the auto-start behaviour on the Telus box. Removing them will prevent application load timeout errors and I have not noticed any loss of functionality.)
    <receiver android:enabled="false" android:exported="true" android:name="">
    	<action android:name="android.intent.action.BOOT_COMPLETED">
    	<action android:name="">
    <receiver android:name="">
    	<action android:name="com.iwedia.action.START_ERICSSON_APPLICATION">
    	<category android:name="android.intent.category.DEFAULT">
    	<action android:name="android.intent.action.GLOBAL_BUTTON">
    	<action android:name="">
    <service android:enabled="true" android:name="" android:stopwithtask="false"></service>
  5. Re-build the APK using apktool:
    apktool b com.telus.mediaroom.tvx.proda
  6. Sign the APK that you just built with SignApk

Now just side-load the APK you signed onto your Shield TV. If everything was done correctly the app will install and run just as it would on the original Pik TV hardware – but faster.

You can also pair the Pik TV remote with your Shield TV, however most of the useful buttons like Pik TV, Guide, Prev won’t be mapped or functional.

In theory this same process will allow you to run Pik TV on any Android TV device, but I have only tried it with the Shield. Obviously, you still need a Pik TV account and are subject to the same Telus-only connection restrictions.

    Soundcore Life P2 True Wireless Review

    After a long search for aptX (crucial if you want to watch videos with minimal latency) true wireless earbuds that charge via USB-C (finally!), I’ve found a pair I’m happy with in the Soundcore Life P2. Besides sounding quite good, they have physical button controls that I prefer over touch (which I tend to activate by accident frequently). If you’re looking for true wireless earbuds for music or video without spending a fortune, and you value USB-C charging, these should probably be near the top of your list. As long as the provided tips give a good and tight seal in your ear, they should work for a wide range of activities too.

    The line is step 3 cannot be found in the AndroidManifest.xml. Is it possible that it was removed or modified?

    • Some Guy

      April 3, 2019 at 10:11 am

      The APK posted for download here already has the line removed…

      But if you’re using the APK from the Play Store, it has to be the Android TV version – the APK for phones and tablets will not have that line and will not work on Android TV.

    Has Telus changed something as of April 8, 2019 as I keep getting the login screen then the app crashes before I can enter my password. Curious if anybody else is getting this.

    • Some Guy

      April 11, 2019 at 10:54 am

      I have not seen that issue…

      Occasionally, on my Shield TV at least, I get a “application services timeout” error when launching the Pik TV app (even though the app actually starts correctly and starts streaming in the background).

      I find the best solution is to close the app from the recents screen immediately – without choosing an option on the error dialog – and re-opening the app. Sometimes when this happens I have to login again, but the app never crashes.

      Closing the Pik TV app from the recents screen after you’re done watching usually prevents this from happening in the first place.

    Got it working and works great for last couple months. I know the PikTV Android box has a custom remote. Specifically has a guide button.

    Anyone know a quick way to load the full guide after watching a channel for a little while? Have to use the “quick guide” — seeing one channel at a time and more of a nuisance.

    • Some Guy

      You can do what Some Guy said, or if you’re using a 2019 Shield remote you can go to Settings -> Remotes & Accessories -> Customise Menu Button and select “Send ‘Menu’ command to app”

      That should bring up the guide by clicking the hamburger button on the remote.

    Thanks for the advice. I loaded the modified apk on my Sony Android TV. Logged in with my Telus account and it works great. Only issue is that US stations (ABC, NBC, CBS etc) are not available – says I need to be logged in via my home internet. Any ideas how to fix this? May follow up with Telus as well. As for Optik TV, I also side loaded this apk. It works (and I get the US stations) but the UI is crap on the larger screen and the video quality is not as good as the Pik app. Really disappointed that Telus is playing games with us and not officially supporting Optik on the go or Pik apps for Android TV. Bell does via their Fibe app……

    It works flawlessly on Android TV, to exit always have to use the home button, back button doesn’t work to close this app. Is there any other button on the android tv remote to close this app.

      April 29, 2020 at 6:48 pm

      There has only been one other release since the September release, which I have just published on this post now. Code changes between the last version are very minor error handling changes, so I don’t think there’s any need to upgrade if the current version is working well for you.

    I can confirm their is a new version on the Telus Arcadian STB -V2.00.030.9 STB May 25, 2020

    Thought everyone might like to know that this work-around applies to the Sasktel MaxTV Stream app as well. It seems that Sasktel and Telus run the same consumer hardware and put very similar code in their apps.

    Removing the same respective lines of code from the MaxTV Stream APK makes the app hardware agnostic as well. I’m happily running it on my shield now, and thrilled to see it running at a reasonable speed on some decent hardware instead of the pathetic arcadian box.

    Thanks again for posting the changes to make to the manifest!

  • WeirdG

    September 4, 2020 at 6:23 pm

    I found a way to download the latest PikTV STB app. I didn’t make any changes to it, and just installed it as is and so far it seems to be working just fine on my FireTV 4K Stick. Telus did a complete overhaul of the app. The entire UI has changed, and the best part is they finally added an ‘Exit’ button!

    I haven’t tested the app for very long, so I’m not sure if there are any issues with it, but so far it seems to be working just fine. There is a bit a delay/lag when using the menu system, but it’s tolerable. So far I haven’t experienced any issues while watching Live or On Demand content.

    The structure of the AndroidManifest.xml file is completely different than what is shown in Some Guy’s instructions, so I didn’t make any attempts to change it. Maybe Some Guy can tweak it when he has some time, and upload a modded version of the APK.

    In any case, I uploaded the unchanged APK file to my Mega account. INSTALL AT YOUR OWN RISK!

        Yw! I’ve been using it for the past few days without any issues. The only setback I’ve found so far is that you can’t sort On Demand content by “My Channels” (subscribed), like you can with the Live TV channels. Hopefully they fix that in future app updates.

      Here is the link for pik-tv_2.00.055.0_STB.apk – not sure the difference between 2.00.049 but it is working with my Shield Pro & Tube 2019 versions. I uninstalled the previous one before installing this one and it worked first try no problem. Not tested with Shield 2015/2017/FireTV devices.

      See below for Pik TV v2.00.055 for STB. I am using it on my Shield Pro & “Tube” 2019 models. Works great.
      **Have not tested on Shield 2015/2017 or FireTV devices**
      For me it only worked once I uninstalled the previous version first. If that still doesn’t work you can try to manually Settings -> Apps -> Pik TV -> Clear data (will have to re-login again etc) and try again

    Just tried to find the Pik TV app on the Android TV play store and couldn’t find it. I’m using a Sony TV. Disappointing, but it’s still working with the sideloaded version. Will keep you posted if this changes.

    It seems as though the latest Telus changes are forcing an app update. For those of us without a Shield but with a Sony TV, would you mind uploading the latest version, or letting us know how to download the right APK for Android TV (or is this the same as the Android phone version?)?

    I’m using Sony Android TV, the most recent one cannot be run on my Sony Android TV, and I cannot find PikTV in Google Play Store for Android TV. The bottom old version works fine with Sony Android TV, but the definition is lower.

      Looks like with the recently updated app the old one on a FireTV Stick can’t access PIK services and eventually displays “Application Load Timeout”.

      Does anyone have a solution to get it back up and running on a FireTV Stick?

      Thanks in advance.

      What link can you share it to me? Thanks

    December 16, 2020 at 5:10 pm

    Echoing what Matt said above — looks like Telus has killed the endpoints / servers that the old 1.x series of the Pik TV app was using, so this post (which has been incredibly useful – THANK YOU!) could use an update to reflect this fact. Sucks too, because this new app is much slower and clunkier than the previous version – but hey, at least it still works on my Sony AndroidTV as well as my MiBox… and hopefully it stays that way!

    Was able to download the APK for my devices by going to then selecting “TV” (leave other radio buttons alone), then click “More Settings” and change the Screen Density – I used “xxxhdpi (640)” and was able to download app version STB.

    The new app runs slowers than the previous one and it does not run on rooted devices but ive finally found a way to run it, using rootcloak and xposed installer.. hoping that someone can mod the app so it does not eat a lot of ram just like the previous version. Thanks

    I’ve tried to install it on my Fire TV 4K stick and it reports that it had “trouble parsing the package”. Guess that it is incompatible.

    Works good on firetv stick 3rd gen.
    I tried to install it on android box and it installed ok but wouldn’t play any channels saying that it can’t be played on “Rooted” device.
    Is there any way to resolve this issue, instructions or .APk without rooted device check would be awesome 🙂
    Thanks in advance

      Try using rootcloak and xposed installer so it does not check if device is rooted.. installed those and it bypass the root check.. use google and read the stepS otherwise message me and ill provide tou with the files to download and install.

    I got my Fire TV Sticks working again by revisiting the site to which there is a link at the top of this Blog. It appears that this site is being updated with the most recent version. I installed the version I found there and my PIK TV service was restored. Note that I simply installed the current version (without uninstalling the old version). That way my Telus credentials were retained.

      Hi Matt A. So how did you get it to work? I have an Sony Android TV. Previous App had been working fine but just stopped. Tried installing the new version, but not working (partial screen comes up but no functions). Don’t really want to buy a Nvidia shield so looking for advice.

        I can confirm I have the same problem on my Sony A8H. The apk linked at the top of this post will not install. The newest version will install, but I just get a scrambled partial screen.

    Hi Everyone,

    Am I correct to assume that the APK no longer needs to be modified ever since the new version came out?
    I see everyone posting links to APK sites, so I assume these are just the unmodified APK and it’ll work on any devlce?
    I’m thinking about signing up and it’ll be much simpler if no modifications are needed.

    Let me know, thanks.

      Now that Pik TV is available in the app store for both the Shield and Google TV, I haven’t looked into this recently – but, it seems like you may be able to download the APK for other Android TV devices here:
